Case Study: Asbestos removal at national manufacturing giant Industrial asbestos removal and decontaminate cleaning

Client: GMT Manufacturing Ltd

The sale of a large manufacturing site in Wirral prompted a thorough asbestos investigation, followed by the implementation of a phased removal plan to ensure zero disruption to the live operation.

Asbestos Services UK was appointed by GMT Manufacturing Ltd, one of the largest manufacturers in the UK of railway sleepers, to manage all asbestos removal works prior to the sale.

The result of an initial survey had identified several areas within the manufacturing plant where asbestos insulation board was present and in good condition, however, some damaged asbestos insulation board and debris was identified and concealed behind wall cavities and cladding areas.

A full programme of removal and decontaminate cleaning of various areas was agreed and a plan devised to ensure the day to day operation was not affected. Asbestos Services UK developed an action plan consisting of five clear phases centred around the location of asbestos and live work space areas within the factory.

The required ASB5 process to HSE was generated and Phase 1 began in December 2014 with completion of Phase 5 in February 2015, with each completed phase signed off safe for re-occupation by independent UKAS accredited analytical company, with additional re-inspection carried out by additional UKAS independent analytical company instructed by the new owners. This contract was completed with no disruption to daily operations within each phase and finalised on budget.
