Case Study: Foxfield School
Removal Of High Risk Asbestos from school building and surrounding outbuildings prior to site demolition

Client: Wirral Borough Council

Asbestos Services UK were appointed as licenced asbestos removal contractors on behalf of Wirral Borough Council to carry out removal of all asbestos materials within the School building and its surrounding outbuildings prior to demolition of the site to make way for new housing.

The works were split into five phases concentrating on removal of all low risk asbestos materials in phase one with the remaining four phases notified to HSE under the required ASB5 14 day notification period.

Phase one consisted of removal, under semi controlled conditions, of all vinyl floor tiles and bitumen adhesive, asbestos cement soffit board and various toilet cisterns around the site.

Phases two to four included the removal of all the high risk asbestos under fully controlled conditions, including direct DCU connection to airlock tunnel, within the basement boiler room to remove all pipe lagging and asbestos debris. Further various small to medium sized enclosures were erected around the school site to control the removal of asbestos insulation board safely.

A larger enclosure was built to accommodate the whole of the school gym to remove asbestos debris from the floor void areas. Astrategic enclosure was built to include the service duct area of the school to remove all asbestos lagging/debris to pipework including various emergency escape areas fitted with full harness and winch system in the unlikely event of an emergency.

Dave Coleman, Managing Director of Asbestos Services UK commented: "This contract once again showed the commitment of AS(UK) operatives working in a safe manner around this busy site as demolition whist demolition took place. The removal process was more straight forward working to deadlines in a phased manner, completed on time."
